How a hanging car diffuser works
A hanging car diffuser is a small bottle of fragrance with a wooden cap and a cord. The scent travels into the porous wooden cap and is released slowly into the car, so it works as a car air freshener without a plug or batteries.
How to start it
Follow the instructions on the card first. With most hanging diffusers, you open the bottle, close it with the wooden cap and tip it briefly so the cap absorbs a little fragrance. Tip it again whenever you want a stronger scent.
Where to hang it
Hang it from the rear-view mirror by its cord, making sure it doesn't block your view, and keep it upright so it can't leak.

Protect your dashboard
Fragrance oil can mark plastic, leather and paintwork. Don't over-tip the bottle, and wipe any drips straight away. Car diffuser liquid is made for the air, not for your skin or clothes.
How long does a car diffuser last?
It depends on the heat, how often you tip the bottle and how much air flows through the car. Hot weather makes the scent stronger but uses it up faster, so in summer a little goes a long way.
Don't leave perfume bottles in the car
A car diffuser is made for a hot car; a perfume bottle isn't. Heat can change a perfume's scent, so keep perfume indoors. Our guide on storing perfume explains why.
